Charles Darrell Slocum's Obituary
Charles Darrell Slocum was born June 19, 1948, in Weed, California to Clarence Slocum and Audrey Williams.
He graduated form Edison High School in Fresno, California and attended Contra Costa College where he received an AA degree in Sociology. Charles continued his education and obtained a BA degree in Human Services from Cal State Hayward. Later he was awarded a MA degree from Lone Mountain College in San Francisco.
Charles Slocum dedicated his life to higher learning and was passionate about the education of children. He was employed for 10 years with PG&E. During his employment he and a group of other African-Amercians men co-created The Black Survivors. It was as a member of this organization that he cultivated his love for youth education. The Black Survivors would fund-raise and even invest their own money into scholarships for the youth in Richmond, California. He spent over 33 years devoted to the children within the Oakland Unified School district. He loved his job and he loved all of his “kids”.
Mourning his passing are; his wife Robin Slocum, six sons: Charles Slocum Jr. , Stacy Slocum (Tara), Tracy Slocum (Brenda), Dethrick Slocum, Christopher Slocum, and Rahshad Slocum and one daughter, Courtney Riley (Manuel) along with 27 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, three sisters: Donies Henry, Rev. Bernadette Johnson, and Joy Armbrister and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
