Charles W. Crane's Obituary
Charles William Crane (Charlie) passed away at 98 with his family at his side on October 6, 2013 in Hayward, CA.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Joy, sons Gary Crane (Helen), Gary Brenneman (late), Jack Brenneman (Claudia), Debbie Turner (Larry), Mindy Fischer (Doug). He was known as “Baba” by his grandchildren Larry Crane (Sherry), Ray Crane (Tracy), Mitch Brenneman, Stacie Jessee (Matt), Lisa Brenneman, Amy Brenneman, Samantha Dubé (Marc), Cara Fischer, Megan Fischer-Oliveira (Drew), Bryan Turner, and by his 14 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his dear cousin Clara.
Charlie was born on March 3, 1915 in Beaumont, CA. He graduated from McClymonds High School in Oakland and worked for the US Postal Service for 39 years, first as a carrier and then as Superintendent of Mails. In 1943 he joined the US Army, serving 2 years in England and France, and was in the reserves for 30 years, proudly attaining the rank of Sergeant Major.
Charlie was an avid fan of all major college and professional sports as well as an accomplished basketball player (varsity at McClymonds), bowler, square dancer and bridge player. Charlie and his wife Joy traveled the world together for over 40 years. Some of his favorite places included India, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and Rome. He loved music, often making up tunes and jokes to amuse his family and friends.
He was a lifelong volunteer to numerous schools, the Boy Scouts, and was active in the National Association of Letter Carriers for over 70 years.
In his later years, his greatest joy was spending time with his family, who love him and miss him.
Friends are invited to a memorial service, 1:00 Saturday, October 19 at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland CA 94611. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army or your favorite charity.
