I knew Chas virtually through a couple of bike forums. I was in search of his knowledge for a fellow Bike Forums member who sought my advice on dating a Gitane (he noticed I have two). I of course thought to direct him to Chas, but in the course of doing a little research, I learned of his passing.
I too dated my Gitanes with Chas' help. I first encountered him over on the now defunct GitaneUSA forum. As many others experienced, he freely shared his extensive knowledge. He made me feel like I was the first person to have ever asked a question about dating Gitanes - his post must have taken an hour to write and populate with appropriate photo documentation. But no, that was simply how he treated every person who asked for help.
A previous owner of my 1970 Gitane TdF had drilled out the derailleur hanger to accept a low-end 10mm bolt-on Shimano derailleur. Chas guided me on obtaining a sleeve to fit a period-appropriate Simplex RD. I made great memories with that bike.
It is a sad day indeed when such a kind, knowledgeable, giving man such as Chas passes. We are all better for having known him either in person or virtually.
May you ride in peace.
