Overdose prevention centers and safe consumption sites save lives, San Francisco's return to the criminalization of homelessness and harm reduction leads to needless deaths.
Charles was a young man with life left to live; he did not deserve to die alone, when there are medications which reverse overdose. Maybe this tragedy would not have been prevented by an Overdose Prevention Center, but maybe it could have been. They have been shown to save lives in the places they are utilized, lots of lives. There are others out there who will experience tragedies like this, that could have been prevented, because politicians and bureaucrats would rather criminalize addiction and leave people to suffer alone, without anybody there to intervene if they fall unconscious. Often, all it takes is for someone to be able to live another day, week, or month; for them to be in the right place to break the cycle of addiction.
I offer my sincere condolences to his family. He seems like he was a bright and vibrant soul, who was loved dearly. I hope that society can reach a point where peoples lives are prioritized above politics, and that our leaders can begin to lead us in the direction that countless studies and a plethora of research has shown to be a better course than the one we're on now.
