Celebrating Brandon Jenkins Weinrub, 1988-2019's Obituary
Brandon Jenkins Weinrub, who passed from this world on November 18, 2019, was a young man with a loving heart and a charming personality. He had a strong creative streak, great sense of humor, empathy, and gift of gab that endeared him to many people in all walks of life.
Brandon grew up in Oakland, living with his mother Edith Jenkins Weinrub and father, Al Weinrub. He attended St. Elizabeth High School, Merritt College, and Holy Names University.
Brandon was born a gifted athlete, excelling early in life in team sports like baseball, basketball, and soccer, but finding his real passion in BMX biking and skateboarding. He found skateboarding, in particular, to be a way to be free, to express himself, and to excel. He translated his love of skateboarding into advocating for and building skateboarding facilities like Town Park in neglected neighborhoods of Oakland. He understood how skateboarding could help build community and uplift youth who find little support and encouragement in their lives.
Brandon was a free-spirited person who danced to his own tune—having difficulty conforming to rules and norms set by others. Nevertheless, he worked hard and generously at the things to which he was devoted and was much loved by those who knew him through these pursuits.
Brandon will be deeply missed by his family, friends, co-workers, and community members—all those who came to know and love him over his brief 31 years. His parents invite his extended community to share their memories, photos, and stories at a celebration of Brandon’s life on Saturday afternoon, December 14, 2019. Please see the Service Details tab for more information.
Those wishing to make a donation in Brandon’s memory can write a check payable to the Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation, PO Box 13267, Oakland, CA 94661 and note in the memo: “For The Town Skateboarding.” Alternatively, you can donate online to For The Town Skateboarding at: http://www.oaklandparks.org/support-us/town-skateboarding.
