Betty Jane Fowler's Obituary
Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Fowler
June 11, 1924 – December 1, 2016
Resident of Oakland and San Ramon
Betty Jane Fowler passed away at the age of 92 on her mother’s birthday, December 1, 2016. Betty was born in Chico, California to parents, Harry Ray LaPoint and Verona Frances Little.
As a child growing up in Biggs, a Sacramento valley farming community, she developed a love of animals as she was surrounded by every conceivable farm animal. She continued her love of pets owning cats and dogs over her lifetime. Betty graduated from Biggs High School and attended both Chico State and Arizona State Universities. In her freshman year of high school, Betty followed in her mother’s footsteps and joined Rainbow Girls where she held all chairs and served as worthy advisor to the organization while she attended college. She went on to become a lifetime member of The Order of Eastern Star.
Betty taught elementary school after college until she married Harry Francis Fowler but after 13 years of marriage, Harry’s life was cut short by a tragic automobile accident. During those happy 13 years, Betty was a housewife and mother to two sons. When she lost her beloved Harry, Betty set out to continue her teaching career. While pursuing additional education at Cal State Hayward, she was told about a job at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in their business office in Oakland. She applied and was hired, working 26 years for them before retiring in 1989. Betty involved herself in the community, volunteering in the gift shop at Kaiser Hospital, in the distribution section at the White Elephant Sale and the Snow Building at the Oakland Zoo.
Betty loved bowling, waterskiing, gardening and crocheting and was an avid sports fan. She played softball as a young woman and continued her love of sports becoming a season ticket holder for the Oakland Raiders and regular attendee at A’s games on the weekends. Betty was a long time member of the Oakland A’s Booster Club. She also regularly supported Tony LaRussa’s ARF charity.
In her true style, Betty moved from her home of 64 years in Oakland to her apartment in the Villa San Ramon where she made wonderful friendships and enjoyed her life playing poker, bingo and having the social life which she was known for.
Betty is survived by her sons, Thomas (Susan) and David (Alison); her grandsons, Mark (Karrah), Darren (Megan), Corey and Joshua; her great-grandchildren, Jack, Amelia, Brooklyn and Mason Fowler.
Betty will be interred with her husband, Harry, at Chapel of the Chimes, Chapel of Serenity, Oakland, California. The family will be celebrating her life in a private service.
