Bernice Janet Fong Yuen
March 20, 1932 – February 16, 2018
Our dear Bernice Yuen left our world suddenly on February 16, 2018 in Berkeley, CA. Born in San Francisco on March 20, 1932. She grew up in San Francisco & lived Berkeley for over 55 years. She was 85.
Her funeral will take place at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland on Wednesday February 21st at 1pm.
Bernice was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt to her friends and family.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Allison and Michael Yuen, sister Shirley Chin and husband Lyman, her brother Eugene Fong, and nieces and nephews, Carolyn, Glenn, Terrence, April, Kerrie & Heather and grand nieces and nephews and cousins. She was “Aunt” Bernice to her friends, Richard DiLeo and Stephanie Weisman.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbert and son, Timmy.
Born in San Francisco Chinatown, she graduated from Galileo High School & attended the University of California, Berkeley. Bernice worked at Fort Funston as well as the Berkeley Fire Department as an administrative assistant. She met her husband, Wilbert, after his time in the army and graduation from Cal.
After retirement, she and Wilbert traveled the world. She loved tai chi. She tap danced into her 70s. She was a very knowledgeable basketball fan & held Golden State Warriors viewing parties at her house throughout the season. Attendees were treated to ice cream after wins.
Bernice was wise, quiet, sweet, kind & thoughtful beyond words and always there for her family and friends.
We will always remember you Bernice, with your jaunty hat ready to go and see and be part of your great world.
We miss you. Thanks for all you gave to our lives and our family.
