Oakland
Benson Fong, long a resident of Oakland, California, passed away at the age of 91 and entered into the presence of the Lord on Jul. 16, 2017. Born in 1926 in Zhongshan, Guangdong province of China, Benson immigrated to the U.S. in 1947. His first marriage was to Lillian Miu, with whom their son, Alan Dean Fong, was born in 1957. Tragically, Benson became a widower in 1962 and eventually married Elaine Yau Yuk Ling in 1964. From their marriage would be born Eva and Edmund Fong. He was a loving husband, devoted father, trustworthy friend, and successful businessman.
For most of his life, Benson successfully owned and operated a number of grocery stores and meat markets, including for 30 years the Fong Bros. Market in East Oakland. He was a skilled butcher, loved cultivating fruits and Koi in his backyard garden, and was famed for cooking routine feasts at the Fong Family residence.
Benson was widely beloved for his generosity, tireless industry, and devotion to loved ones. He helped many build a life in the Bay Area. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Fong; children, Alan, Eva, and Edmund Fong; and grandchildren, Carise, Tiffany, Justin, Austin, and Oscar. Funeral services will be held 10am Friday, Jul. 21, 2017 at Heritage Baptist Church (2960 Merced St., San Leandro) with subsequent burial at Mountain View Cemetery.
