We became close to Barry and Karen during the Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland, in (I'm pretty sure) the summer of 2001. Barry and Karen were the main chaperones and fundraisers for the Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble on that historic trip. We knew right away that we were going to be close to each other. The best thing about the BHS performance that summer in Montreux is how great the Berkeley kids were. BHS came onstage right after a spiffily dressed band from a big Midwestern city. They were all in uniform, and they performed pieces by reading from prepared sheet music. In the manner of true jazz, the Berkeley kids improvised everything. They had Tshirts that proclaimed "Great musicians, distasteful dress." We were so proud of them--and proud that we were from Berkeley, where so much great improvisation has occurred over the years. Barry truly had the Berkeley spirit.
