Annie Lee's Obituary
Annie Chu Hung Lee was the second of three children born in Waihiawa, HI on May 25, 1928. In 1933 the family moved to Canton, China, where her parents were originally from. It was there, in Canton, where she met and grew up with her future husband, William.
Annie and her two brothers returned to Hawaii in 1949 during the early years of the People’s Republic of China. In 1952 William decided to leave Canton for the United States to start a business. During William’s travel to the United States he had a layover in Hawaii in which he contacted Annie. In 1953 Annie decided she’d follow him to the “Mainland” and they were married in Reno that same year.
They lived in a small apartment on Oak Street in Oakland at the outskirts of Oakland Chinatown. Annie’s first job was a seamstress in Chinatown and soon thereafter became a waitress for over 45 years. She was very sociable and always greeting everyone with a smile. She enjoyed watching Chinese movies, listening to Chinese music, enjoying the company of her grandkids and her family and she loved cooking dinners for family and friends.
Happily married for 64 years, Annie was a devoted wife and loving mother to Leighton and wife Linda Lee, Anna Lee, Susan and husband Ronald Ni, and adoring grandmother to Michael Lee, Arnold Ni and Kelly Maeyama.
Annie will always be remembered as a gentle, loving, modest and compassionate woman.
