Amy Yuk Gee Wong's Obituary
Amy Yuk Gee Wong August 28, 1923-November 8, 2016
In remembrance:
Amy was married in China to Herbert Wong and later immigrated to the United States to join her husband in the late 1940’s, settling in Oakland. She arrived not speaking any English; she would eventually understand any English spoken to her, but chose to respond to others in a mixed Cantonese and English. This kept some confused about her comprehension with the conversation, but most people found this to be an enduring quality.
Amy and Herbert had five children: Kevin, Judith, Catherine, Joanne (deceased), and Eric. Many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews and nieces survive her.
Amy worked as a clerk in the family liquor business for many years, and later was employed as a caretaker to her elderly employers. She was known as a hard worker and always provided for her family. There were hard times to endure throughout her life, but she overcame all challenges without complaint. Amy was able to earn enough to aid her mother and siblings to immigrate to the United States, thus providing a better future. Amy ensured that there would always be good food on the family table, which was well prepared, as she was known to be an exceptional cook.
As a new immigrant, family members from several generations surrounded Amy. There are many stories about how she was a respected and caring mother figure. Most recently, she was a surrounded daily encounters with her great granddaughters. Fortunately, Amy and those of us who were fortunate enough to know her mutually benefitted from a relationship of love and caring. Amy found comfort with her Christian faith. I will never forget this angel sent to earth, we will miss her dearly, thank you all.
