Alice Garland's Obituary
Alice was born October 4th 1929 to the union of Ernest and Irene Womble of Goldston, North Carolina. Alice was the fifth of nine children, all who have preceded her in passing except her remaining sister, Martha W. Hunt of Baltimore, Maryland.
Alice's early education was in Goldston, North Carolina, where she excelled academically. She was class valedictorian for her high school graduating class. She attended Shaw University before relocating to Oakland California. She met and married Allen James Garland who preceded her in death. Alice was employed by the US Postal Service where she retired after more than 30 years as a supervisor.
She was an active member of the Bible Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. She served in the Nurses Aid Department as secretary until her health begin to fail. Alice was a traveler and lover of arts-Oakland Symphony, Friends of Negro Spirituals, Oakland and San Francisco museums, to name a few and loved gardening.
She leaves her daughter, Durelle B. Garland, son, Ronald Ores Garland (Connie), grandchildren, Leonard Barksdale, Quinton and Sandy Barksdale, and Robert W. August IV, great grandchildren Kalei and Quinton Jr., brother and sister-in-law, David and Lillian Garland, sister in law Bethsader Womble of Ellicot City Maryland and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, family and friends of both east and west coasts to treasure her memory.
