Alda Margaret Kuss' Obituary
Alda M. Kuss age 97 passed on March 08, 2002 at Alta Bates Medical Center in Berkeley. Although Alda was being treated for cancer for several years she suffered little as life’s eventual cycle came full circle. The past five years Alda has lived with and was given loving care by her daughter and son-in-law, Bee and Richard Gerlach.Alda is survived by her three children: Bee Gerlach of Oakland, Lew Desch of Santa Rosa and son Don Desch of Santa Cruz, and her son-in-law Dick Gerlach of Oakland: her five grandchildren: Robin Coenen, Gary Desch, Tammie Negomir, Sandy Desch and Eric Desch and her five great grandchildren.Alda’s life started in Peru, Illinois in 1904. She attended the Art Institute of Chicago at the age of 17, married and moved to Oakland, California in 1928 with her three children and first husband who died in 1957. Alda’s second husband, Theodor Kuss, a high school friend, was a bridge engineer who worked on the Golden Gate Bridge as well as other famous structures including the base structure for the space shuttle which took Alda to New York to live for nine years. After Ted’s death in 1967 she moved to Los Gatos, California to be near her youngest grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 24, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA.
