Akira Nakamura's Obituary
Akira Nakamura Resident of Walnut Creek Akira, 86, passed away peacefully at his Walnut Creek home on August 8, 2013. He was surrounded by his family and friends in his final days. He was born in Oakland, CA on October 21, 1926 to Shotaro and Toki Nakamura. He graduated from Oakland Tech High School and then received a B.A. degree from Armstrong College. He was a veteran who served in the Army and was honorably discharged on November 21, 1946. On September 24, 1949 he married Rurie Mizuhara the eldest daughter of Kikui and Aiko Mizuhara. Along with his late brother Tadashi Nakamura he founded Nakamura Realty in Berkeley which is still in business today. He then started working for George Brown & Sons as an insurance sales executive. The company later was acquired by Frank B. Hall & Co. After that he worked for Jardine Insurance Brokers, Alexander & Alexander, Aon Insurance Services, ABD Insurance Services and finally at Wells Fargo Insurance where he eventually retired in 2010. He was very active in building a relationship with insurance companies in Japan through the Insurance School of the Pacific. Japanese insurance companies would send their employees to the U.S. to learn the American insurance system. His clients included many Japanese Corporations like Toyota, NUMMI, Hitachi, and Sumitomo Bank. He was very active in sports and played basketball in his younger days. He coached basketball for the Oakland Rams and was a past president of the Oakland Buddhist Church. He is survived by his wife Rurie, sons Dennis, Michael and Richard Nakamura. He is also survived by grandchildren Ross, Rachel, Dana and Lucas Nakamura and his sister Kay Sakauye from Houston, TX. Akira passed away after a very long and fulfilling life of kindness and generosity. He will be deeply missed by all of his immediate family, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws and many friends, church and business associates. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the Oakland Buddhist Church, 825 Jackson Street, Oakland, CA 94607.
