LAWRENCE L. F. LEONG
January 31, 2022
Lawrence Lin Fat Leong’s parents were immigrants to the U.S. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and returned with his parents to mainland China at age 5. Returning to Honolulu at the age of 10, Larry stayed with friends where he attended and graduated from Kaimuki High School. After serving in the U.S. Army for 5 years and graduating from a technical university in Chicago, Larry later met his wife Ruth of 62 years. They settled in Oakland California where they raised three sons, David, Richard and Cleighton. He was known as having a very loving and cheery personality and was a friend to everyone. The loves of his life, besides his family, were household DIY projects, woodworking, and gardening. Larry was a faithful Christian and charter member of New Life Christian Fellowship in Castro Valley. He was also an active member and Past Master of Live Oak Lodge #61 (Free Masonry), active member of the Chinese Acacia Club, active member of the Shriners, highly active in his son's scouting activities as an adult leader (Pack 369 and Troop 339) and participated in their neighborhood watch group in Oakland. In retirement, Larry remained active in his garden and volunteered in the community - especially as part of the “Tuesday Team” at Harbor House in Oakland. Following their move to Acacia Creek Retirement Community in Union City in 2017, Larry remained active by spending time in the hobbyshop and woodshop where he especially loved making creative gifts for family and friends, repairing items for the residents of Acacia Creek and building wooden toys to give away to children during the holidays. Larry peacefully departed to join God’s Kingdom on January 31, 2022, while at home. Larry is survived by his wife Ruth, sons Dave, Rick & Cleighton, daughter in-laws Elice, Kathy, and Linda, five grandchildren, and many other beloved relatives, friends, and church family.
