Blues Legend, John Lee Hooker Centennial Birthday Celebration

“Centennial of The Blues,” a community event honoring the life and legacy of John Lee Hooker, raises money for the John Lee Hooker Foundation and MLK Jr. Elementary in Oakland. The celebration features musical performances and a silent auction, featuring an Epiphone guitar.

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017
• 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. (“Blues Lovers Meet & Greet” – free & open to the community)
o Public viewing of the crypt where John Lee Hooker was laid to rest on 6/21/01
o Live music
o Members of the Hooker family share stories with fans
• 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. (ticketed guests only)
o Tickets: $50 in advance, $55 at the door. The first 25 guests who purchase tickets will receive a special gift bag. Purchase tickets here.
o Ticketed portion features John Lee Hooker’s family members, remarks from Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, a blues historian, silent auction (including an Epiphone guitar) and more blues music

EVENT TIMELINE:
• Throughout the event: silent auction and handcrafted pieces from Beadz by Z Jewelry (personally made by Zakiya Hooker); ticket sales and silent auction proceeds support the John Lee Hooker Foundation
• 1:00–2:30 p.m. – “Blues Lovers Meet & Greet” / Public reviewing of John Lee Hooker’s signature crypt (Pacific Plaza)
• 2:30–3:00 p.m. – Music by the Bay Area’s own Lloyd Gregory
• 3:00–3:10 p.m. – Shift from public event to ticketed ceremony
• 3:10–3:15 p.m. – Welcome and introduction by Glenn Thomas, Jr. (grandson)
• 3:15–5:00 p.m. – Remarks by:
• Bishop John Lee Hooker Jr.
• Libby Schaaf, Mayor of Oakland
• George Holland Sr., President, Oakland NAACP
• James Harris, President, Oakland Unified School District
• Ramas Groves, Principal, MLK Jr. Elementary School
• Ronnie Stewart, Blues Historian, Founder of the Bay Area & West Coast Blues Societies
• 5:00–6:00 p.m. – Blues music, mingling and dancing. Music by “The Bobby Young Project” with special guest performer Zakiya Hooker
