An Outlet for Grief: Creating a Path Toward Healing

When a loved one dies, it can be very difficult to cope with grief. Often it helps to find an outlet for expressing feelings such as talking to someone or participating in a meaningful activity. For many people, keeping a journal can help.

You don’t have to be a writer to put down your thoughts and feelings. In fact, you don’t even have to write at all if it makes you uncomfortable. You can draw in your journal, use photos that are meaningful to you, or even cut and paste pictures from magazines to express your feelings.

Your journal is whatever you want it to be. It should be a place where you can express your feelings and thoughts without reservation. You can also use it to write a letter to your loved one. There’s no right or wrong way to go about it. The following list of prompts can help you get started:

  • One of my favorite memories of my loved one is…
  • Today, I’m feeling…
  • I am having a hard time with…
  • I am really missing…
  • I have been feeling a lot of…
  • I could use some more…
  • The hardest time of day for me is…
  • I feel most connected to my loved one when I…
  • I am ready to feel…
  • A simple thing I could try today to make things easier is…
